Electromotive force measurements method was employed to determine thermodynamic properties of liquid Ag-Bi-Sn alloys using solid electrolyte galvanic cells as below:
Pt, Ni, NiO | yttria stabilized zirconia | Ag-Bi-Sn, SnO2, Re, kanthal.
Measurements were carried out for three cross-sections with constant Bi/Sn ratio equal: 1/3, 1 and 3 and for silver compositions ranging from 10 up to 90 at.%, every 10 %, resulting in 27 different alloy compositions. Measurement temperature ranged from near liquidus up to 11800C. Linear dependence of emf on temperature was observed for all alloy compositions
and the appropriate line equations were derived. Tin activities were calculated as finction of composition and temperature and full thermodynamic description was then derived; results were combined with the available thermodynamic and phase diagram data, and optimisation procedure was performed using ThermoCalc package. Thermodynamic parameters were derived for all the phases existing in the system, and phase diagram calculations were carried out. Results of calculations were presented in tables and graphs.
