Results of the experimental study on the zirconium-tin-iron phase diagram system are exposed. The existing phases and their equilibrium relationships in a wide extension of the Gibb´s triangle surface, for 800 ºC and 900 ºC isothermal sections, are analysed.
For the experimental work, a set of ternary alloys was designed, produced and examined by different complementary techniques: quantitative analysis with electron microprobe, qualitative analysis with electron scanning microscopy and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination (optic and electronic microscopy). Phase transformations associated to the Zr- rich region of the system (sample number 21) were investigated with electrical resistance vs. temperature measurements.
The resultant ternary phase diagrams of the system are exposed in this work, covering an extended surface of the 800 ºC and 900 ºC isothermal sections. Two new ternary phases of the system are reported. In the following figure, the 800 ºC isothermal section is shown with details of the Zr-rich region.
